Doing It My Way!

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything on my blog but life truly got in the way. I promise to do better starting now. This note that I've copied in the section below actually inspired this entry:

Just one to say that I really enjoyed the Curtis Black series. Still haven't found anything to compete with this series. Tried reading others, but nothing has toppped with series yet. Hope you will get to writing something on this, or nearly like it. Thank you for listening.

Kimberla Roby is a fantastic author and I enjoy her Curtis Black series as well. However, I don't want to be Kim Roby or any other author. I enjoy being Jacquelin Thomas and have worked very hard to develop my own unique voice and style. I'm aware that all readers will not love my work, but I write for me and I write for the scores of readers who want a Jacquelin Thomas original.

Authors love hearing from readers and we are open to suggestions, but I personally find it in poor taste to have someone suggest that I write like another author. I think it's just best to read books by your favorite authors and keep quiet about it. It's like me telling James Patterson that I'd like for him to write more like John Grishom. It's an insult.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when it comes to my writing like or emulating the style or storylines of another author--I really don't want to hear it. I write from my heart and write the stories I enjoy reading. Little on earth is in my control--therefore when it comes to my writing--I'm doing it my way.

Hooray for writers as control freaks! :-) I totally agree with you. The thing I love most about reading bunches of different authors is seeing how the voices change from book to book.

I just want to give thanks to the Almighty God for the gift that He has given you. You will never know how much reading you books have inspired my life. I am a Raleigh, North Carolinian myself... And I came across your books quite by accident... But I can honestly say that I have had an awesome time with the after effects. :) For the past three nights I have been up reading your books from cover to cover. Just wish I had the money to go and buy them all right now... LOL Keep churning out those page turners... And may God add a rich blessing to every page you write. I pray for Increase in your life even the more.May He add a DOUBLE TRIPPLE portion to all that He has already blessed you with....

Wow, the message you're responding to is absolutely crazy! The beauty of reading different authors is the difference in style. I am part of my church bookclub and we've read several books each month. We're currently reading your book "Saved in the City". I have to say it's the variety of all the authors that we all love. If you love to read, you should open yourself up to differenct styles of writing. This book is excellent by the way! I have a core group of girlfriends, and I know true friendship is hard to come by. Thanks for this one! :)

Be encouraged, and I look forward to reading more from you.

Good for you for setting that reader right. I love your books and I love Kim's book, but to tell either of you to write like the other would be an insult to you both! Keep up the good work!
